Wednesday - August 3, 2016

Trying to pick-up some of the TT vibe (seeing as I'll never get to the IoM in race week), I'm going to so a lap of the current TT course. Rather boringly by the car, but it does mean I can take 3 with me easily enough. Not planning on trying to be a lap record (which would be a feat in 1.4 Astra...) and plenty of opportunities to stop, take pics etc. Duration of the TT lap is a bit unknown, it certainly won't be a 17 minute championship beating time!

Start: Aug. 3, 2016, 10 a.m.
End: Aug. 3, 2016, 11 a.m.
Tacked on after we get back into Douglas after the lap of the TT, driving on down to The Sound of a meander about to take in the scenic views, spot some birds, maybe even seals and basking sharks. We could also head up to Meayll Stone Circle, whatever takes our fancy really. Duration? Weather and boredom threshold depending. :-) Start time is very approximate as the duration of the TT lap is a bit unknown, it certainly won't be a 17 minute championship beating time! Public transport down to The Sound is also available.

Start: Aug. 3, 2016, 11:30 a.m.
End: Aug. 3, 2016, 3:30 p.m.
What do LBW attendents run on their computers? Stupid question. Our smartphones are computers, so we should of course run Linux on them, too. Linus says he is happy that Android phones run the Linux kernel. Well, from a kernel perspective that might be right, but in userspace things don't look that bright. Except that there is Sailfish OS, which gives you a pretty standard GNU/Linux userspace. If there weren't one key issue... Disclaimer: I haven't really contributed anything major to the distro nor am I the best expert on it. I've just happened to work very close to it for nearly 8 years and I use the phone as my primary phone. I've got the impression quite some LBW attendants have not been exposed to the topic a lot, so I decided to give a short lightening talk on the topic. Or well, maybe a double lightening talk... if a better expert than myself is in the audience just speak up and contribute...

Start: Aug. 3, 2016, 6:45 p.m.
End: Aug. 3, 2016, 6:55 p.m.
Pizza or Lasagne food, one course, likely made by the La Mona Lisa in Laxey and brought up to us. Please advise the organizers if you want this food. Sign up in the hall by 13:00 on the Tuesday 2nd August. About £3.00 per person.

A ten minute funny factual Video relating to one of the answers in the Isle of Man Connections round in the Quiz. I cannot tell you now what it is because that would spoil a quiz question!

Thursday - August 4, 2016

Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle goes back to the 11th century and was a royal residence and centre of government for the island for over 200 years. Manannan is the island sea god. Discover a Celtic roundhouse, Viking long-house and a Viking long-ship. Depart from the hall @ 10:00 (tz: LBW). Space for 2 dog-friendly passengers at a squeeze.

Start: Aug. 4, 2016, 10 a.m.
End: Aug. 4, 2016, 1 p.m.
Or why not all maps are equal, how one map wants to kill me, and it can all be blamed on Belgium... I've spent a lot of the last few years studying maps and cartography, in the process I've found some interesting features of our every day mapping and positioning systems. I'd like to do a short light hearted talk on adventures with creative cartography.

Start: Aug. 4, 2016, 3 p.m.
End: Aug. 4, 2016, 4 p.m.
In the light of what the UK "decided" on 23rd June, I'd be interested in discussing with anyone who: - has opinions about the subject, or - knows what they're talking about (I appreciate that these two do not necessarily coincide) what we think this is going to mean for Brits living and/or working in the EU, and for foreigners doing the same the UK (I hope that reference is taken in the humorous way it is intended). I have some ideas, and some vested interest (I'm currently both living and working in both the UK and Germany), but very little political or economic awareness, so I'd be interested in talking to other people about this topic to see what other ideas and insight people may have about what might transpire over the next 0-5 years...

Start: Aug. 4, 2016, 4 p.m.
End: Aug. 4, 2016, 4:50 p.m.
I have just purchased a barn[1] in Shropshire. It is possible to connect it to the grid supply but expensive. Because of this <p>I have done a lot of research on batteries, PV, turbines etc. I've been gathering data on UK solar performance and wind speeds. During the talk I'll explain power requirements and the options and costs for going off grid. I'll also discuss PWM vs MPPT and how solar thermal panels may not be the cheapest solution for hot water. I will also briefly discuss why, apart from for watering the garden, rainwater harvesting is a waste of time. I'm also looking for comments and experience from other LBWers too! I might have made my mind up about how to power my place by the LBW :-) [1] Well, a cow shed really but barn sounds much more upmarket!

Start: Aug. 4, 2016, 5 p.m.
End: Aug. 4, 2016, 6 p.m.

Friday - August 5, 2016

From here: http://www.carfreewalks.org/walks/1179/laxey_beach_to_snaefell_summit A bracing 6.5 mile walk up to the highest summit on the island and, if the long-range weather forecast can be believed, the possibility of actually being able to see something! Forecast: http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Snaefell/forecasts/620 There is a cafe at the summit, or bring a packed lunch if you prefer. Descent can either be on foot for the insane, or via the mountain railway. Departure from the back door of the hall, 0900 sharp.

Start: Aug. 5, 2016, 9 a.m.
End: Aug. 5, 2016, 3 p.m.
The brewery, in Douglas, holds an open evening on the first Friday of each month. Our chance to meet some of the locals and sample a range of Hooded Ram beers from the brewery bar. When visited earlier in the year there were 10 hand pumps as well as numerous bottled beers. There are usually food vans in attendance (previously they have had curry, steak or pie and chips) so we should also be able to get something to eat.

Start: Aug. 5, 2016, 6 p.m.
End: Aug. 6, 2016, midnight

Saturday - August 6, 2016

Plan is for an informal wander in the local area and hopefully find a geocache or 3. If someone could bring a pen or two that would help. Meet at the hall at 10, come prepared to walk upto 5km(just in case a cache is further than expected). If en route we happen across cake, this will be a bonus...

Start: Aug. 6, 2016, 10 a.m.
End: Aug. 6, 2016, 11 a.m.
With the guidance of repeater keeper Dave Osborn GD4HOZ an afternoon visit for interested Amateur Radio people to the Carnane UHF voice repeater GB3IM-C serving Douglas area to look at the Linux All-Star internet linking in use. Also co-sited is the recent Digital Mobile Radio GB7CA UHF voice Repeater. Carnane is the main TV & radio transmitter mast for Douglas. It is located south of Douglas beyond the ferry terminals up on a hill. I think GB3IM is in a small building next to this big TV mast. This will be a drive along a private road so Dave GD4HOZ must accompany us. 4x4 vehicles recommended.

Start: Aug. 6, 2016, 2 p.m.
End: Aug. 6, 2016, 5 p.m.
I shall present a brief musical interlude to round off the LBW week. This will be downstairs, in the room containing the piano.

End: Aug. 6, 2016, 5:45 p.m.
I've told the story to some of you already: There a 3 types of people - The pessimist says the Finnish is too difficult to be ever mastered by a foreigner - The realist says, well, if you work hard enough you can do it in ten years - The optimist thinks she or he can do it in five Well, we don't have five years now, so let's get started with a 10 minute overview of the unique features of this great language. Literature: Finnish as a world language http://www.suberic.net/~tahnan/finnish.html Disclaimer: The presenter speaks Finnish as a foreign language. His 17 year old daughter ends every argument with "First learn speaking". But you won't notice the mistakes.

Start: Aug. 6, 2016, 5:45 p.m.
End: Aug. 6, 2016, 5:55 p.m.
What the organizers got right, got wrong and where do people want the LBW next year. Stand up you budding organizers with your proposal ideas!

Start: Aug. 6, 2016, 6 p.m.
End: Aug. 6, 2016, 7 p.m.
The 2014-2015 building works at The Institute made a Court Yard area at the rear and a gate towards a flat earth area to the wooded ravine area. This gives us the opportunity of a barbecue area away from the building. Also some metal fencing was still there in April 2016 which we can use that to make a safe area. The Institute will be Pub Of The Day until the Beers in the basement are finished off. If the barrel has run out you can still likely buy bottled beers in the Co-op or move onto the local pubs.

Start: Aug. 6, 2016, 7 p.m.
End: Aug. 7, 2016, midnight

Sunday - August 7, 2016
